Hinge Sounds
What exactly are hinge sounds? Well they are just one more way to further customize your Sidekick device, using simple coding that allows short sound clips to override the default hinge sounds and present the phone with an entirely new personality. Hinge sounds are often confused with system sounds, or the sounds that are made when you click buttons anywhere on the device. System sounds cannot be altered for a variety of reasons, but hinge sounds on the other hand change the sounds that the device makes when it is flipped open or close. They are generally found in custom created Themes from the sites, as well as in Catalog Themes, and are often super easy to create, given a little bit of time and effort.
There are many ways to approach adding hinge sounds to your themes, including using pre-made sound effects and clips, which is the easiest method for the beginners that don't have the aspiration to create their own clips. For these type of people, you can follow the links we provide on this page that have short enough sound effect clips that can be used, as well as the defaults we provide below. | For the more intermediate group of Theme makers, you have the option to "create" your own hinge sounds by using sound editing programs and music that is too length to just be thrown in to the theme at the last minute. PC users can download a program from the internet called "Wavepad", which is a simple sound editing software made for Windows-based computers. For Mac users, most of you already have the program "Garageband" on your computer, and you can check out the video down below for more! |
Now that you have figured out which route you are going to take, you will need to follow these steps to assure that the hinges come out right:
- Make sure that the hinge sounds are short and sweet clips (maximum tolerance level is about 8 seconds)
- Check to see if the sound clips are UNDER 100 kb. If it is exactly 100 kb, it still will not play.
- The best way to make the sound clips under 100 kb is to change the bit rate to 56 kbps (kilobytes per second), which should be in the Advanced options of the programs.
- Enter the following text into the Theme text file (at the bottom)(This has been edited, sorry for the confusion! We put a dash between sound and system which caused this code not to work. Please take note of this change and this may be the reason for the sounds not working before! The text below IS correct. Thanks to Jordan for this report!):

- That text tells the device where to assign those sound clips to on the device, so you must name your audio clips 'open.mp3' for the open hinge sound and 'close.mp3' for the close hinge sounds. If the sound clips are in .wav format, or some format other than mp3, try to change it to mp3. If you are unable to do so, simply change the above text to correspond to the clips that you have (ie open.mp3 ------> open.wav etc.)
Now go ahead and try to make your Theme have custom hinge sounds, and if there are any problems, feel free to contact us!
